I do most of my work from my home office. No commute and the ability to control my schedule are great. I can focus on the things I feel are important.

However, there are also some disadvantages. Unless I make an effort, I can spend days without getting out of the house. Occasionally, even going days without communicating with someone outside of the house. Sometimes it can feel secluded.

The last few months, I have been planning a couple of new projects. I have struggled to see them clearly in my mind or decide on a clear direction.

Until I got out of my box.

I left my home office and came to Japan. I speak a different language. I talk to new people. I think differently. I can see my box from the outside because I am outside. Challenges start to seem like opportunities. Things just started to slip in to place and make sense.

Going to another country isn’t always an option to get a different perspective. But you can get into a different environment. Change your routine, join clubs and groups of people that have different views. Participate in new activities.

If you want to think differently, act differently, do different things, and speak to people who think differently. More of the same will only get you more of the same.
