Why I started this website
I started my first blog after moving to Tokyo in 2006 at the recommendation of Garr Reynolds (Presentation Zen). It was a way of sharing the things I was learning including productivity, finance, language, management, and life hacks. I loved writing that blog. Unfortunately, that passion died as I began developing and promoting websites as a business. Writing became a chore. I tried, and failed, to start again on several occasions.
In 2016, while building a house in Hawaii, and with my first daughter on the way, I started an MBA. Over the next two years, I did a ton of writing (and changing diapers). I found myself really enjoying it, often writing more than was required. I realized the value was simply in the enjoyment.
The purpose of this blog is to share things I feel are useful for readers while also allowing me to keep a record of what I am learning and am excited about.
I hope you enjoy it.
After graduating with a BS in business, I traveled half-way around the world to start an international business career in Japan. While I was in Tokyo, I worked as an international admissions counselor, met a lot of interesting people, and learned a lot. After a couple of years, and partly thanks to Tim Ferriss’s The 4 Hour Work Week, I decided to try a different lifestyle.
I quit my job, sold all of my stuff, and moved to a small, sub-tropical island of Okinawa. I lived there for 5 years while doing internet marketing and running an English school. Deciding to start a family, my wife and I moved to Hawaii. In the five years we were there, I worked as director of sales and marketing for a small company, started my own marketing and web design business, built a house, started an MBA, and added a daughter to the family.
I finished my MBA in March of 2019 and have recently moved back to California. I help business owners improve their productivity, focus, marketing, and management and work with schools and organizations to help youth develop professional skills.
I’m passionate about learning and education:
I was raised by a single mother on welfare until I was 14. Education has allowed me to follow a different path. My first job after graduation taught me that college was just the beginning of my education. Continuously learning has allowed me to consider different perspectives and find better ways to do everything from work to staying healthy. I am an avid reader, consuming 2-4 books a month.
I am fact/results focused:
My behavior and habits are based on facts and results. I love science. This has led me to adopt a plant-based diet, change the way I work, and the way I learn.
I have lived in multiple locations; including 8 years in Japan:
Each place I lived felt like home. Each place came with close friends, some who I am still close with and some I have lost contact with. Home really is a concept and family are the people I trust and love.
I love creating things:
I’m at my happiest when I am making, improving, or learning something. Building a piece of furniture, writing an article, starting a business, or creating a marketing strategy.
